In 1839, in his novel Alpes et Pyrénées, Victor Hugo establishes visual and semantic correlations between the letters of the alphabet and elements of nature.
"A, it's the roof, the gable with its cross, the ark, arx, or the embrace of two friends who kiss and shake hands, D, it's the back; B, it's the D on the D, the back on the back, the brush, C, it's the crescent, it's the moon;(...)
The TypeTroubles project is a photographic safari that questions the use of typography in the public space through a collection of letter-images, signs-things, talking drawings. This project is a story of the Latin alphabet, its use and representations.
The TypeTroubles project started in the summer of 2016 on Instagram and has become over time an augmentable and participative collection. Each loafer can offer a TypeTrouble and thus increase the giant alphabet.
I like to observe how anonymous graphic designers give to certain letters a particular form which represents an object in connection with the referent of the inscription. These letters then have a dual function: they are at the same time phonograms, like the other letters, and pictograms.
I consider these images as vectors of a visual poetry of everyday life, even though it is part of a language called "vernacular" in the field of graphic design. I like these images produced on behalf of small businesses, restaurants, brands of fruits and vegetables.
